Current Challenges in the Full-Back Positions

Manchester United’s recent tactical adjustments under manager Michael Carrick have revitalized the team’s performance. Notably, the full-backs, Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot, have been deployed in their preferred positions. This shift has coincided with a remarkable record of seven victories in nine matches, alongside a single draw and defeat.

Despite this improvement, both Shaw and Dalot frequently face scrutiny from fans and analysts alike. Their individual shortcomings have been cited as barriers to elevating the team to a higher competitive level.

Transfer Market Focus

While strengthening the midfield is a priority this summer, particularly with the impending need to replace key players like Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, improving the full-back positions is equally critical. The club’s leadership team, including Director of Football Jason Wilcox and Head of Recruitment Christopher Vivell, is currently evaluating potential signings, including young talents Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton. However, it is essential to allocate budget for defensive reinforcements as well.

Over the past decade, Manchester United has invested approximately £150 million in full-backs, a modest figure compared to other elite clubs. United’s attempts to bolster this position have included both emerging talents, such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who accounted for £50 million of that total, and seasoned players like Alex Telles.

Unfortunately, the club’s strategy appears inconsistent, suggesting a lack of clarity regarding their ideal full-back profile. At the start of the 2023-24 season, the need for immediate reinforcements became apparent when they secured Sergio Reguilon on an emergency loan due to injuries to both Shaw and Malacia.

Criticism of Current Players

Shaw has been a consistent performer, participating under every manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure, except for David Moyes. However, his effectiveness in attack has diminished due to age and injury concerns. Despite contributing defensively, his offensive output has been minimal, with only one goal in the current season, raising questions about his suitability as a modern full-back.

Dalot, on the other hand, possesses the athleticism and has shown significant improvement under Carrick’s guidance. However, he still demonstrates moments of inconsistency, particularly in decision-making during critical plays. With three assists this season, he ranks second in the squad, but lapses in concentration remain a cause for concern.

Missed Opportunities with Young Talent

Regrettably, United has also overlooked promising young talents from their own ranks. Alvaro Carreras, a highly regarded young full-back, was sent on loan to Granada before being sold to Benfica for £8 million. Within a year, he transitioned to Real Madrid for £43 million, where he has since flourished, highlighting the missed opportunities within United’s talent management.

Complex Full-Back Market

Finding suitable full-back replacements is complicated by a market that does not offer as many high-quality options as the midfield. The criteria for full-backs have evolved, requiring players who excel in both defense and attack. As such, identifying the right individuals who can meet these modern requirements is paramount for United’s recruitment efforts moving forward.
